Cree LED XLamp® XP-E Color LEDs include XP-E2 color LEDs that deliver up to 88% higher maximum light output than other comparable color LEDs. These LEDs enable lighting manufacturers to address a wide spectrum of applications more cost-effectively, such as architectural, vehicle, and display lighting.


Here is a customized LED OPTICS project we designed for our clients' warning lights. They use XP-E2 LED in this lighting project. Its high brightness and efficiency make it well-suited for applications that require strong illumination and clear visibility.

How do we design secondary optics?


1. Understanding the LED Characteristics:

Beam Angle: Determine the beam angle of the XP-E2 LED.

Light Distribution: Understand the LED's light distribution pattern. This will help in designing lenses that can correct or enhance the light spread.

2. Optics Design Considerations:

LED Lens Type: Choose the type of lens based on the required light distribution. Common types include: Fresnel Lenses, TIR Lenses, Aspheric Lenses, Reflectors

Material: Select appropriate materials like polycarbonate and acrylic, considering factors such as optical clarity, impact resistance, and temperature tolerance.

Lens Shape and Design: Design the lens shape to match the desired beam angle and light distribution. For example: Spot Lenses

Flood Lenses and Custom Profiles.

3. Thermal Management:

Heat Dissipation: Ensure that the lens design does not impede the LED’s heat dissipation.

4. Optical Performance Testing:

Prototyping and Testing: Create prototypes and test the optical performance.

Adjustments: Make necessary adjustments based on testing results to optimize the lens performance.

5. Compatibility:

Fit and Mounting: Ensure that the lens design fits securely with the XLamp® XP-E2 LED and integrates well with the housing or fixture.
